The Flood Mitigation Certification Program gives property owners and municipalities the peace of mind that comes from knowing the flood-fighting products they’re using to protect their facilities meet the most rigorous standards in terms of quality and performance. The program tests flood mitigation products to the American National Standards Institute ANSI/FM 2510 standard. Only those products that meet all requirements of the program are certified and receive the FM Approved mark – which is recognized and respected worldwide.

About The Program

This program was created in 2012 by the Association of State Floodplain Managers in partnership with FM Approvals and the US Army Corps of Engineers. From the beginning, it was created with the idea that the program should be available to products on a nationwide level. The evaluation would include testing of flood-fighting products using a common set of repeatable laboratory tests that simulated flood conditions. Since there were no industry accepted tests previously, this approach marked the first step towards being able to fairly compare one product against another in the marketplace. The addition of facility audits for the manufacturing and drawing control locations meant that only products that met the performance requirements and had demonstrated control of production would be certified and truly differentiated from other products.

There continues to be an evolution within the program as we have welcomed manufacturers from other countries and expanded the product scope to address the changing needs of flooding. The program has grown to include different types of valves and pumps used in flood mitigation, as well as our latest additions of flood glazing and wall penetration seals. This evolution will continue as we believe that the program has become a catalyst for the development of new and innovative products to combat this increasing hazard.

We encourage all to join in support of this program and send a sincere thank you to the individuals and organizations that have helped in the progress to date. We are grateful for your sharing of knowledge and experience and look forward to long term mutual successes against future flood events.
